The Ingham Family have come under fresh criticism for their recent antics while visiting one of the most poignant historical reminders of the atrocities of the Holocaust.
Infamous Youtubers Chris and Sarah Ingham were on a road trip with their six children, aged between two and twenty-one years old, when they parked up in near to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial And Museum in their former DPD van-turned camper, with trailer van in tow. Both Sarah and eldest daughter Isabelle visited the site of one of the most horrific events of the 21st Century. However, never could they have imagined the frenzied response from detractors and fans alike.
Before entering the building Sarah addressed the camera and stated that she would film ‘what she could’. During the ensuing vlog images with Sarah’s voiceover appeared on screen. Images of shoes of those who had sadly perished and other horrendous imagery made for very disrespectful viewing.
The backlash was swift with commenters pointing out ‘Why would you film inside Auschwitz!?!? It’s not a place for content. How horrific of you to whip your camera out in such an awful place’ and ‘Out of respect you shouldn’t film there.’
Others pointed out that ‘you need explicit permission to use footage for commercial use such as YouTube monetisation’.
Indeed the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial And Museum commented under the vlog informing them they needed to remove the footage.
‘This video contains footage recorded at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum without the required permission.
It was filmed during a guided tour for individual visitors. Digital creators may not record content this way, as filming can disrupt other visitors and interfere with the guide’s work.
The commentary also contains some minor factual inaccuracies. This is one reason the Museum asks digital creators to contact us in advance. Prior
arrangements and authorization allow us to support creators with reliable historical information and help ensure that published material is both accurate and respectful of the Memorial Site.
Publication of material recorded at the Memorial requires prior authorization.
Please remove this video and contact the Museum in advance if you wish to record content at the Memorial in the future.’
Sarah Ingham, the official spokesperson for The Ingham Family, was quoted as stating in response – ‘Well that’s a shame, considering our tour guide ALLOWED us to film and told us very directly where we could and couldn’t film. Maybe they need to train their staff better on what is/isn’t allowed’
It appears that Mrs Ingham was confusing personal and commercial usage of images taken from within the confines of Auschwitz. Certain areas within the concentration camp are completely off limits to photography whereas others are permitted. However, as stated on all the information online, commercial use is required to have prior written consent sought in advance and the footage to be checked before publishing. Auschwitz Museum confirm this was not the case in this instance.
The YouTubers have since reluctantly removed the footage from within the vlog and changed the thumbnail, deleting all negative comments as if the whole affair never happened.
Prior to the visit to Auschwitz, during an earlier vlog, Sarah Ingham appeared to aim a highly insensitive joke in the direction of her husband Chris. She said ‘do you wanna sleep in the concen…’ stopping short of finishing her sentence. With a visit to the concentration camp imminent it was clear what she was going to say. Make a joke about sleeping in a place where over a million people quite literally went to sleep and never awoke.
