Picture the scene: The date was 4th July 2024. It’s a huge day in the UK. We have waited fourteen long years for this. The day we all come together to oust the Conservatives from their untenable position as the powerhouses of the UK Parliament. This was less about who would win, rather about just getting rid of the Tories who are universally hated no matter which Party you support. Grabbing your jacket, you hobble your ageing body down to your local Polling Station. On arrival you tentatively look around, yet excited to stick that cross exactly where the Tories deserve! You prop yourself up in one of the cubicles, hidden from view. You grab the voting sheet and scan for your chosen Party. Hang on! where is the Party you want to vote for? You scan it again.. surely to goodness they are there? Another scan, this time slower just in case. Nope, not there!
Did that happen to you as it did thousands of others on the biggest day in UK Politics in years? Not every Party were represented in every area. Personally, I was forced to vote for someone I didn’t even want to win. Surely this is against my constitutional rights? Surely democracy in this country means that I can vote for whomever I wish? I genuinely thought that was the point. Seems I was wrong.
This is not an isolated case either. I have heard from others who had the same issue.
Surely this is a rigged result then? Labour eventually won by a landslide. This is predicted to end the country which makes it interesting given they had so many votes. Would they have won by so many or even at all if we were entitled to our rights of voting for who we actually wanted to win, rather than pushed in one direction?
I feel let down as I did not have a choice in a democratic society.k
